This programmatic paper examines whether increasing complexity creates new conditions for semantic incoherence to emerge in artificial intelligence systems. It distinguishes incoherence from complexity, contradiction and inconsistency, and introduces semantic incoherence as a specific object of investigation within the BSI research programme.

Investigating incoherence across conceptual, semantic, epistemological and computational systems, including the relations between coherence, consistency, contradiction and heterogeneous forms of representation.
QualComputing
Developing a quality-first approach to computation based on conceptual coherence, ontological fidelity, interpretive robustness and inferential traceability.
Semantic engineering, agency and artificial intelligence
Investigating semantic drift, ambiguity, contradiction, knowledge representation and the preservation of meaning across increasingly autonomous and agentic artificial-intelligence systems.
Comparative epistemology
Examining how different intellectual traditions organise concepts, categories and relations, and how comparative analysis may contribute to contemporary knowledge engineering.
Language, meaning and action
Research at the intersection of semantics, pragmatics, philosophy of language and the effects produced by linguistic acts.
Terminology, provenance, standardization and regulation
Studying the relations between conceptual systems, professional terminologies, technical standards and regulatory frameworks.
